Lee Jong-pil, managing director of the KT Infrastructure Research Center, speaks on rediscovery of the value of copper wire through Giga Wire technology in his keynote speech at Broadband Forum, which opened at Millennium Seoul Hilton in Seoul on June 17.

KT presents a road map for copper wire-based 10-gigabit Internet technology to telecom operators from all around the world at Broadband Forum (BBF), which will run at Millennium Seoul Hilton from June 17-20.

Broadband Forum is an organization established in 1994 for broadband communication technology development and ITU standardization related activities. Its members include 29 telecom service providers, including AT&T and Vodafone, and 77 manufacturers, including Intel. The event is held quarterly. In the Seoul session, the forum prepared a session for KT to introduce its Giga Wire technology.

“As the industry accelerates towards a Quality of Experience led Gigabit Broadband network, operators are creating true hybrid networks over any available medium, extending fiber networks to deliver the enhanced broadband experience end-users are demanding,” said Robin Mersh, CEO of Broadband Forum. “As a global home network standard, G.hn is a technology that addresses this requirement and I look forward to welcoming KT GiGA Wire to our quarterly meeting, where they will demonstrate a ‘live’ GiGA Wire site, including a fully commercialized service environment and the resultant experience that can be achieved with G.hn technology.”

The forum operates a Giga Wire demonstration booth during the event to introduce equipment and technology related to copper wire and coaxial cable Giga Wire and UTP-based 10G Internet transmission (5G-GES), demonstrate the vector boost technology, the core technology of Giga Wire that minimizes frequency interference, and discuss business cooperation with companies interested in Giga Wire technology.

At the end of the first day, about 50 members of the forum visited the Dongdaemun Good Morning City shopping mall, where KT Giga Wire service has been implemented, to check how Giga Wire provides stable giga speed Internet services to customers using the copper wire in the commercial environment.

Giga Wire was jointly developed by KT and Ubiquoss (a domestic maker) as part of the government's “Giga Internet Demonstration Project” in 2013. It utilizes existing copper wires for buildings and apartments where it is difficult to install optical cables to provide giga speed Internet services. Giga Wire is recognized for its stable service and has been exported to Turkey, Malaysia, the United States, Botswana, Vietnam, and the Philippines.
