Hyundai Motor’s Kona EV has become the first home-made electric vehicle to surpass 20,000 in terms of registered units

The Korea Automobile Manufacturers Association said on Sep. 14 that 20,215 Kona EVs were registered as of the end of July. The Kona EV made its debut in May last year. It surpassed the 20,000 registrations in one year and two months.

The Kona EV has cemented its leading position in the electric vehicle market thanks to its long mileage. The model’s official range is 406 kilometers on a single charge, but it can actually run 600 km or more on a single charge, depending on driving environments, according to the company.

Hyundai Motor's Ioniq Electric, which surpassed the 10,000 registrations for the first time among Korean electric vehicles, had 17,862 registered units, showing its sustained popularity. The Ioniq Electric is the longest mileage electric vehicle currently selling in the world based on standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Other models which surpassed 5,000 registrations included the Kia Niro EV (8,044 units), the Chevrolet Bolt (7,200 units), the Kia Soul EV (7,178 units) and the Renault Samsung SM3 Z.E. (5,870 units).
