The Ministry of Health and Welfare will invest 200 billion won from 2020 to 2028 in research to find out the causes of dementia and prevent and treat the disease.

The Ministry of Health and Welfare announced on Sept. 19 that it will invest 200 billion won from 2020 to 2028 in research to find out the causes of dementia and prevent and treat the disease.

The investment plan is part of the incumbent government’s policy, which was initiated in 2017, to put more responsibility on the state in fighting dementia and taking care of dementia patients.

The government has implemented measures to reduce burdens on dementia patients and their families by providing customized care, medical assistance, and long-term care services to dementia patients over the past two years.

Since December 2017, dementia patients and their families have been receiving integrated services from counseling, examinations, one-on-one management, and service connections at the Dementia Relief Centers (including 31 partially opened centers) located at 256 public health centers nationwide.

Under the national dementia plan, medical expenses paid by people with severe dementia were lowered from 480,000 won to 200,000 won on average. So far, 40,000 have enjoyed the benefits.

"We will continue to steadily implement the national dementia plan so that the government’s dementia combat system can take firm roots," said Park Neung-hoo, minister of health and welfare.
